Board Activities Covered Under Workers’ Compensation

The CSD Pool covers almost 4,000 board members as part of its Workers’ Compensation program, and issues approximately 385 Board Member Only Workers’ Compensation Coverage Documents annually. We also have another 275+ members who extend WC coverage for their Board of Directors. With this in mind, it is important that members accurately monitor what coverage is available under class code 8811-Board Member Coverage. Contemplated under 8811 are administrative duties inherent to Board Members who are generally in the office, attending Board Meetings or community functions in capacity of the Board Member role.

What is not contemplated is anything beyond administrative duties. The reasoning is simple and applies to all classifications because class codes, and their corresponding rate, are relative to the specific hazards associated with each job task assigned to the classification. A typical board member has very little risk compared to firefighters, window washers, or roofers. Obviously the risks inherent to those occupations would be higher than someone in an administrative position, as would their corresponding rate.

We’ve seen several instances where individual Board Members may also be doing work outside the classification code of an administrative worker, such as excavation, snow removal, or other higher hazard tasks. When board members take on these expanded roles, they should no longer be considered a board member and must be assigned the class code and corresponding rate specific to the expanded task being performed.

It is important that board members only perform the administrative duties assigned to their class code. If your board members are performing other job duties, you must notify the Pool immediately.
